Here are some tips that you should think about before you start studying:
- Give the content meaning
Memorizing meaningless content should be super difficult! Instead of just trying to memorize words, give the words meaning. Think of a time in your life that relates to what you are trying to remember. If you can put the words with an experience or lesson you will be much more likely to remember the content.
- Start basic
Don’t try to remember too complex of ideas first. Starting with the basics will help you tremendously. Learn about all of the categories first and start to really understand the ideas. Once you have the basics down really well, then start to learn the specifics. Do not try and learn the basics of one subject and then go into the details. Learn every basic idea first and then dig into specifics.
- Make up a story
It sounds silly, but making up stories about the content can be very helpful. You story does not need to be realistic, but it needs to be good. If you can really let your imagination take over, you will be surprised how involved into your made up story you can become. You may not be able to memorize one simple idea, but if you put it into a story, you won’t forget your crazy story.
- Play teacher
We all know that you spent a lot of hours as a child playing teacher in your basement. Bring out the old game, and start to teach what you are learning. Teach it your roommates, spouse, kids, or just your dog! If you can teach what you are learning, you really understand it!
- Talk about it… to yourself
Have you ever had to make a hard choice? You have probably caught yourself talking out loud when you are trying to make a hard decision. Talking to yourself, outloud, is very beneficial. Lock yourself in your bathroom and start talking about what you read. If you say it outloud you may be able to remember what you said once you get inside of the testing room.
Don’t be afraid of asking for help when you are trying to learn to be good at memorizing. Memorization isn’t easy for everyone, but everyone can do it. With a little bit of practice and dedication, you will do great on your exam.
